I hiked past this elder at Philmont Scout Ranch this summer and was struck by it. Trees die very differently in New Mexico than in Ohio. In NM they die and dry then hang around for quite some time. I saw many dead trees standing that had been there long enough to lose its bark. Here in OH, since it's so humid, they die, rot from the inside out, then fall to finish decomposing all before the bark has time to loosen and fall off. In any event, the dead wood in NM is stunning.
